If you’re just starting out, here are 10 things that are a waste of time and money in your first year (in my opinion) for home service businesses

  1. Mission statement / vision

    1. Your vision should be “make money” and your mission statement should be “by any means necessary.”

  2. Fancy branding / logo

    1. You’re not fooling anyone. Everyone knows you’re new. Use free Canva logos, ask your friends what they like and move on. You can change it later

  3. A catchy well thought-out name

    1. Just pick a name. No one will remember it anyway but they will remember you! Here’s a template to use (remember, you can always change it later)

      1. Positive adjective + service + location -> Power Landscaping MI

  4. Business cards

    1. I can’t remember the last time someone asked me for a business card. Don’t waste your money here

  5. Wrapped vehicles and fancy equipment.

    1. You need something that is practical, inexpensive, but professional. Don’t roll up to a client site with a rusted out car. But don’t go buy a $80K truck because you think you have to

  6. Social media (keep it simple)

    1. Unless you have the time and resources to go all-in on social media, keep it simple (before/after photos, client testimonials, etc.). Do not hire a videographer or editor.

  7. Expensive uniforms

    1. You don’t need embroidered Nike or Lululemon polos. If you really want something, buy a name tag from a trophy shop for $15 and wear a generic polo from Walmart

  8. A $3,000 website

    1. An off-the-shelf website with a lead form will be just fine. You don’t have enough credibility for Google yet anyway so no one will see your website.

  9. Custom CRMs

    1. Google Sheets with manual reminders to follow up work perfectly well. Just keep it organized and don’t forget to follow up!

  10. Office Staff / Admin help

    1. Conserve cash in your first few months. If you can take calls, route jobs, bill customers, etc. then you don’t need anyone but your contracted labor. Wait until you have a good grip on your business before you look for admin help
