If you own a cleaning business, you know that hiring is the biggest bottleneck to your growth. It’s not customers. There are more than enough customers to go around but there will always be a shortage of good cleaners.
Let me pose a hypothetical: if you have a good cleaner, a total rockstar, A-player, how much would you pay to keep him/her? My guess is a lot. Just one, rock solid cleaner can bring your business $75k-$90k in revenue per year.
If that’s not motivation to make sure you’re always hiring, I’m not sure what is. With STR cleaning especially, finding good cleaners is tough.
Over the past 3 years we’ve completely revamped our hiring, vetting, and onboarding as we’ve grown. Here’s a quick recap:
Sourcing
We use Samedayturn.com to post jobs and start the initial conversation with cleaners. It’s anonymous so you don’t need to worry about applicants blowing up your phone and it helps you pull the great cleaners from the rest of the pack. If you’re looking for new cleaners, start here.
Vetting
We have a quick, 15-minute video call with each qualified applicant. But before they ever get on a call, we send a pre-recorded video explaining our process and how we work with cleaners. If they watch the video and still think it’s a good fit, they can schedule the 15-minute video call.
Onboarding
After they’ve passed the video call and their references check out, we move forward to an onboarding call with all the cleaners who have gotten to that point over the past 2 weeks. The purpose of this onboarding call is to provide them with all the relevant information they need to succeed on the job. We share our standards and our processes. It’s tough to get to this part of our process so if they’ve made it this far, they’re usually legit.
